Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Summer Tutors Academy so special?

Summer Tutors Academy is the only program which combines in-person, cohorts-based, standards-based academic enrichment with peer-mentoring from advanced college students. If you happen to know of another such center in the entire nation, let us know!

Why in person?

Being away from their friends for months at a time is really hard on most students. Summer Tutors gives students opportunity to meet, make friends, and learn together. Online lessons and tools have their place, but if COVID taught us anything, it is that online teaching/learning has significant limits. Some students simply do not do well learning online as the primary medium. Besides, most parents welcome the opportunity to get these amazing kids off their screen and video games for real world interactions!

Why academic enrichment?

Great question. It is a well-documented fact that students, including the bright ones, lose academic ground during the long summer break. Summer Tutors do not only help students gain ground during the summer, we prepare them for their NEXT grade level. That way, we keep them ahead of the curve as they get back to school. For many students, that early momentum is enough to carry them through the whole semester. This is why we focus on the core middle school subjects - Math, English, Science, and Social Studies.

Why standards-based curriculum?

Why not? Our goal is to get these bright students ready for their NEXT grade level. That means we have to use the same state approved curriculum being taught in their schools.

Shouldn't they be resting in the summer?

Absolutely! The problem, like every parent knows too well, is that after the first 2-3 weeks of the summer break, students are thoroughly bored and want some serious engagement! So, what is the choice - leave them staring at their computer screen all summer long or get them involved for 4 weeks with other students learning and interacting?

Why not a simple activity camp?

There is a place for activity summer camps - games, bonfire etc. And you should get them involved. That is why our summer academy does not start until July - so that they would have had weeks to rest and attend other activity-based programs. And then, after the academic enrichment program, they still have a few weeks more to rest before classes begin.

Why undergraduate mentors?

Emperical studies show that students learn better from competent peers. Middle school-age kids want to be as "cool" as their older brothers and sisters in college. So, they are more open to hanging around with them and learning from them. That is why we choose some of the brightest college students from Wheaton College and surrounding universities, train them, supervise them, and let them serve as academic peer-mentors. Each peer mentor is coached and monitored by a resident certified middle school teacher.

Why group-based tutoring?

Glad you asked! The whole point of in person tutoring is to get the students interacting with each other and making real human interactions. Cohort-based instruction is the way we achieve that. Students take all their lessons with the same group of students throughout the summer. That increases their chance to build meaningful connections and friendship during the summer!

How long does the summer academy last?

For now, this is a 2-week summer Day camp

How much does it cost?

Click on the "Pricing" menu tab to learn pricing details for the 2-week track. The academy is affordably priced with middle class families like yours in mind. But we also recognize that this academic enrichment program may not be for everyone.

What about the leadership development program?

We teach a full course on leadership and youth development, every day of the week, using nationally-acclaimed leadership currculum from Lead4change and John Maxwell leadership programs for youths (K6-12). We see your children as leaders and equip them to lead, right from now!
